Child-friendly spaces

UNICEF and other organisations, such as Save the Children, have been advocating child-friendly spaces and services in war and crisis regions for over a decade. However, there is hardly any documentation on how child-friendly spaces and services – i.e. spaces, structures and relationship offers that enable children to simply be children again – are implemented in high-income countries. In 2018, as a consultant on behalf of the UNICEF Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia, I conducted a case study on »Child-friendly spaces and services for refugees and migrants in Germany« to gain and communicate more insights on this matter.

The aim of the study is to share practical insights and experiences in implementing child-friendly spaces and services in three different types of accommodation facilities for refugees and migrants with practitioners, policy-makers, administrators and academics. Furthermore, two years after the initiative »Protection of refugees in refugee accommodation facilities« had been launched by the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth and UNICEF, it was time for an interim review.
